Recognized as one of the most iconic mechanical chronographs of the 20th century, the Monaco from TAG Heuer has undoubtedly reached legendary status in the eyes of most collectors. With a distinctive set of design principles established in its silhouette, the square style of the collection distinguishes itself as truly recognizable from across the room.
Modernly, TAG Heuer often makes slight variations in its special editions of the iconic line. Each of these contemporary Monaco watches works to carry on the legacy of the experimental and boundary pushing creativity which has framed the collection since its launch in 1969. The latest model from the brand to do this is our watch of focus today, the TAG Heuer Monaco Purple Dial Limited Edition.
In case you couldn’t guess from the name, this watch is a familiar version of the beloved Monaco, albeit one now equipped with an attention-grabbing, all-new purple dial. Diverting from the deep blue hue that has become largely synonymous with the Monaco line, the rich, smokey purple in this limited edition features a sunray brushed texture with contrasting black subdials. Keeping in line with the modern Monaco design, the dial features a 12-hour chronograph register at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute chronograph scale at 3 o’clock.
The Monaco has maintained and long gained renown for its pseudo-square case, with this shape being found in even the earliest examples, like those found on Steve McQueen‘s wrist in the classic racing film, Le Mans. Maintaining its motorsport-infused identity, this limited edition is, of course, no different. It wears at 39mm on the wrist, with it constructed of fine-brushed and polished steel, with a fixed steel bezel topping the aesthetic.
The iconic case design of the Purple Dial houses the automatic manufacture caliber Heuer 02 movement. More subtle purple touches on the oscillating weight and column wheel are put on display by an exhibition caseback to match the dial, with the movement functionally capable of a useful 80-hour power reserve.
Representing a blend of classic and modern design, the TAG Heuer Monaco Purple Dial Limited Edition is a watch unlike much else in the contemporary chronograph market. Limited to 500 total editions, the model is available now via TAG Heuer and authorized boutiques, with pricing marked at $7,150.
